Happy New YOU!
Thank you everyone for supporting us all these years! Can you believe that it’s been three years already? Well, it’s time to look forward and build on your progress. Are you satisfied with where you are and where you want to be? In 2010, the adidas Urban Run wishes a year of fulfillment and happiness and goal-oriented success! The adidas Urban Run continues to thrive with the support of all of our runners; as it is essentially YOUR running club, we value your input on how we can further improve our Monday nights, including where you want to run.
First, I hope to bring a stronger community. The emphasis will surely be built around running, but I would also continue to have people discuss other social issues, questions, and concerns that they may have running or not running related. Despite the short time dedicated to know everyone on a name-to-name basis, our group usually has dinner following the runs. It’s a great way to meet new people and extend your network. I also hope to have community charitable events in the near future!
Second, the adidas Urban Run is held on most Monday evenings, rain or shine. Some runners show up to have fun. But instead of being lackadaisical about it, how about structuring a training plan so that our run can meet your needs. For example, it could be your recovery or tempo run. We are more than happy to assist you on getting that new PR, running your first 5K, qualifying for the Boston Marathon, or increasing your weekly mileage.
Finally, the Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon is coming up on February 7th. For more information including Saturday morning training runs, see the flyer at http://bit.ly/81sFi4 (PDF). Many of our runners will be there running various distances and pacing different groups. And as always, Pacific Coast Trail Runs is giving all adidas Urban Run members a 10% discount; details are on our Facebook page. Make this the perfect opportunity to focus on improving yourself!
It’s going to be an exciting year and with some more special events planned for 2010 so keep your eyes and ears open!
Let this year be YOUR year!

Thank You - 3rd Anniversary Party
A huge thank you goes out to everyone who showed up for our 3rd Anniversary Party. We all had fun as you can see in the pictures. You can view all of our other pictures on our Facebook page! If you missed out, there are $20 specials at the adidas Sport Performance Store with many other items on sale just in time for the holidays.
Tentatively, the Doughnut Mile is being planned as well as a chance to volunteer at the SF Food Bank in January/February, a time when food banks REALLY need your help (not during Thanksgiving/Christmas!). If you can think of any other social events, please join our Facebook page and leave a note!
In the meantime, have a great Thanksgiving and I'll update with routes for the remainder of this year.

adidas Yoga Group Sessions Begin Saturday, October 24th!
Everyone is invited to attend our inaugural yoga class this Saturday morning @ 8:00AM, October 24th, at the adidas Sport Performance Store on 845 Market Street in San Francisco. Yoga mats will be provided for the session; bring a towel and wear comfortable clothing. Refreshments will be served afterward. All participants will receive 30% off most items in the store!
One should not confine oneself to statements such as "I hate yoga" or "Yoga is not for me". We all have potential and certain qualities that develop with time and practice. The best way to get started is by showing up. I am nowhere close to being an expert but I am willing to challenge myself.
For runners, yoga is a great way to decrease your chances of injury by strengthening core muscles that either get neglected or damaged by the repetitive motion and force during running. Performance improves and time spent on recovery goes down. Dedicate 30 minutes of easy yoga after running and cooling down.
Fellow colleague, Lauren, will be leading the sessions. If you have any questions or concerns, please be proactive and ask Lauren. Depending on the dynamic of the class, there may be a wide range of abilities from beginner to advanced, and the intention is to have the workout be inclusive to everyone.
Please print out the coupon below to redeem your 30% discount this Saturday!
The exclusions are as follows. We no longer exclude Predator or Stella McCartney!
* Exclusions apply including, but not limited to 2010 Official World Cup
Match Ball, 2010 Historical World Cup Ball Sets, 2010 Limited Edition
Official World Cup Tech Fit Jerseys, Diesel Denim by adidas, Porsche,
miOriginals shopadidas.com, miadidas.com custom products, and adidas
gift cards.
Also - no other coupons can be used with this offer.

Blanka Vlasic in Stockholm 2007. She won gold in the IAAF World Championships in Berlin two weeks ago.
If you missed the IAAF Track and Field World Championships in Berlin, you can watch all the events demand-online at http://www.universalsports.com/ . There were quite a few surprises as well as some expected results from certain athletes. Here a few highlights.
Usain Bolt coasted to yet more world records including 9.58 seconds in the 100m, 19.19 in the 200m, as well as a Jamaican win in the 4 x 100m relay. After being inspired by world record holder, Mike Powell, in the long jump, Bolt has mentioned that he would someday compete in that event. Tyson Gay ran away with silver in the 100m in 9.71 seconds. Blanka Vlasic (pictured) cleared 2.04 meters--the equivalent of one large Shaquille O'Neal--to take the gold; a week later, she posted an outdoor high jump world record of 2.08 in native Croatia.
One of the biggest shocks was when Yelena Isinbayeva, the two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time World Championships winner, failed to clear any height in the pole volt! Despite the failure in Berlin, it was reassuring last week in Zurich when she cleared a world record height of 5.06 meters!
Another big shock occurred when the Cuban world record (12.87 seconds) 110 meter hurdler, Dayron Robles, failed to qualify for the finals. He was looking strong, winning in all of his races this year. But disaster struck when he inured himself during the semifinals and began to crash into the first few hurdles and DNF'd.
Adidas stars: Allyson Felix won the 200 meter event after a bunch of disappointing 2nd places while Jeremy Wariner ran a season best of 44.60 seconds in the 400 meter, winning the silver medal.
Local favorite and San Francisco native, Shannon Rowbury ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon_Rowbury ), won bronze in the women's 1500 meter event after an arbitration was decided that Spanish winner Natalia Rodriguez be disqualified for moving toward the inner side of the lane and pushing front runner, Gelete Burka of Ethiopia, out of the way and quite possibly out of gold medal contention in the last 200 meters. We admit she's not sponsored by adidas, but we're all proud to have her as a local champion!

Chikara Wins at Quicksilver 50 Mile!
Official results haven't been posted, but "unofficial sources" are saying that Chikara has won the Quicksilver 50 Mile on Saturday in 6 hours 15 minutes, breaking the course record by 20 minutes!! More than proper training, tapering, and a strict, unconventional nutritional program, the secret to his success is um...running with adidas Urban Run San Francisco (although, he can neither confirm or deny this).
You can read the report by fellow ultrarunner, Jean Pommier, on his blog, http://fartherfaster.blogspot.com/2009/05/quisksilver-09-great-one-at-last.html

adidas and Boston Marathon Announce Contract Extension
Link: http://www.baa.org/News.asp?NewsID=390
Boston, Mass. - adidas and the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) are celebrating their 20-year partnership with a contract extension that keeps the brand as the Official Supplier and Outfitter of the Boston Marathon for years to come. Looking forward, adidas and the B.A.A. will be together for the B.A.A.'s 125th anniversary in 2013, and the historic 125th running of the Boston Marathon in 2021.
This year, adidas will again supply the coveted official Boston Marathon jacket and will outfit more than 10,000 race volunteers, media members, medical personnel, race officials and staff. In addition, the extension expands on the adidas role to include exclusive rights to manufacture, distribute, promote and sell B.A.A. branded apparel.
"The Boston Marathon is the world's most prestigious road race. Runners of all levels travel to Boston each April to run, cheer or simply watch history being made. As a running brand it is the place to be," said Patrik Nilsson, President, adidas America. "The Boston Marathon is a key platform for us to introduce new products and technologies, and we look forward to more opportunities to build on the traditions surrounding this race with runners and fans alike."
When adidas first sponsored the Boston Marathon in 1989, the race had 6,458 entrants; this year it will have 26,400. The B.A.A. and adidas will continue to create comprehensive and proactive community outreach programs to serve and promote sports in the city of Boston. Currently, the two entities partner on programs such as clinics for Boston-area runners throughout the year and the B.A.A. Kid's Relay Challenge, conducted over marathon weekend."
The partnership between the B.A.A. and adidas has strengthened the Boston Marathon in ways that not even we could have predicted," said Guy Morse, B.A.A. executive director. "We have been able to inspire, motivate and create products, events and programs that are consistent with the Boston Marathon's prestige and history. Since we joined efforts in 1989, adidas has been with the B.A.A. and with runners every step of the way."
2009 Boston Marathon Product
adidas running product will be on sale at the adidas booth at the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo inside the John B. Hynes Convention Center and at local Boston retailers including Marathon Sports, City Sports, New England Running Company and the Greater Boston Running Company. The full line of product can be purchased online at http://www.shopadidas.com/.
* In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the original partnership and the running of the 113th Boston Marathon, adidas designed a limited edition B.A.A. Supernova Sequence 2 running shoe. The limited-edition shoe features a unique colorway with the iconic B.A.A. unicorn logo. Only 800 pairs of the shoes were created. The shoes retail for $100 and are available at the Boston Marathon Expo, Marathon Sports, City Sports, New England Running Company, the Greater Boston Running Company and http://www.shopadidas.com/.
* All runners should have the chance to show off their accomplishment and adidas and the B.A.A invite them to do that with the Official Race Jacket of the 113th Boston Marathon. Featuring ForMotion apparel technology that optimizes performance and fit, this jacket offers greater comfort and freedom of movement. The ClimaProof lightweight shell allows heat and sweat to evaporate while keeping cold air and wind away from the body. The jacket retails for $90 and is available for men and women.
* For the first time, Marathon finishers will have the chance to create a personalized t-shirt after the race through adidas and partner SpreadShirt.com. Finishers can visit the site to select from various colors and styles and also can incorporate the official B.A.A Marathon logo as well as their finishing time on select designs.

Log your miles and beat the challenge!
Mayor Gavin Newsom challenges you, your family, neighbors, and colleagues to Shape Up with his third annual Shape Up SF Walking Challenge! Starting March 9, 2009 through May 15, 2009 take our 10-week Shape Up San Francisco Walking Challenge and virtually walk the equivalent of the California Coast and beyond!
Each team is encouraged to collectively walk/run 1,016 miles (done!) over the 10 weeks, which is the distance along the California coast. Teams log and track their miles online and can compare their progress against other teams.
Our team is "Save Kezar" and we are sitting in second place with 4721 miles behind "SFMTA Back First" with 6119 miles. Come on, guys, you can't let the people who write parking tickets and MUNI win! There really is no prize, it's just a challenge. But it's also a great way to be responsible about putting in your miles and tracking your own progress.
You can backlog all your miles from March 9th to now. It's also great fun to compare your miles with others in your team.
If you use this link (http://www.shapeupsfwalkingchallenge.org/user/register/67157) you will automatically be put on the Save Kezar team. You’ll need to create a username and password. Then go in and log your exercise miles.
UPDATE: Congratulations to Chikara Omine for 3rd place at the American River 50 Mile on Saturday! http://www.ultrarunning.com/ultra/features/news/bend-runners-win-at-ameri.shtml
He was still able to run a 38 minute 10K on Sunday and do the hilly Urban Run last night! His next major focus this year is the Western States 100 in late June.

adidas Urban Run San Francisco is saved!
adidas America, along with the assistance of adidas Sport Performance Store in San Francisco, has agreed that adidas Urban Run San Francisco should continue as the premier running club in San Francisco on Monday nights! Warren and I received the good news on Monday and it was a final decision that was made in the eleventh hour. Thank you for everyone for your undying support and thoughtfulness! Your emails have truly made a difference and have been a direct reflection of what the Urban Runs mean to you. Store managers, Wil and Bryant, and Lindsay of adidas in Portland believe firmly that with a strong reception from the runners, there is a huge potential to bring out the adidas brand name that had lost its flavor in the past. Unfortunately, not all news is good and the Urban Run program in Santa Monica, Irvine, and NYC will all be inactive as of April 1st.
We hope that you will continue to run with us and have fun. The Bay to Breakers 12K training runs will begin next Monday and the routes are up. Also note the starting time as we will begin early on certain weeks for the “longer runs” if you choose to run that selected route.
Some changes that will take effect are the following:
· 15% off for ALL Urban Run members on ALL shoes and apparel in the store. You must sign up with us in order for the discount to apply.
· A reduced weekly budget, which means that certain food/drink items won’t be the same.
· The current system of Urban Run T-shirts and sackpacks may not continue. A new platform for free schwag is in the works, however.
· The monthly raffle may not be limited to adidas running shoes. An option of choosing adidas running apparel may be a possibility.
· Each week we’ll have either Wil or Bryant discuss the new line of cool adidas shoes, apparel, and accessories in addition to any new promotions. Get to know them well as they are the experts, who are friendly and willing to assist with any questions you may have.
I strongly suggest taking advantage of the 15% discount. A number of high performance shoes are on sale. The adidas adizero adios, the lightweight racing flat that Haile Gebrsellasie used for his world record win at the Berlin Marathon, is currently 50% off at the adidas Sport Performance Store. Use your additional 15% discount to make it worth your while!
Finally, special thanks to Mercedes for her meat pastries, Raymond and Warren for the pizzas and salad, Kate for her cupcakes, Chikara for the Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Aileen for her glazed cake, and Hu family for their noodles. I hope I didn’t leave anyone out and a sincere thank you to all adidas Urban Runners.
I guarantee we won’t be eating like that for a while because we are running HILLS for the next few weeks to get in some great training!
We hope that you will continue to run with us and have fun. The Bay to Breakers 12K training runs will begin next Monday and the routes are up. Also note the starting time as we will begin early on certain weeks for the “longer runs” if you choose to run that selected route.

I guarantee we won’t be eating like that for a while because we are running HILLS for the next few weeks to get in some great training!

adidas Urban Run SF - Final Shoe Raffle Night and Community Dinner - March 30, 2009
FINAL SHOE RAFFLE NIGHT (previous rules apply: you must run once this month and be present on March 30th)
We will host an adidas Urban Run San Francisco Potluck Dinner Party on Monday, March 30 immediately after the run at Sean Lee's house again.
Please invite all your friends and fellow runners to be with us for perhaps the last time on Monday evening. New runners are strongly encouraged for this occasion. As much as we are committed to running and the deep respect of adidas and its products, we are also a community that supports and embraces everyone's efforts and abilities.
We will have pizza, salad, and drinks. You are also welcome to bring other food options such as appetizers, entrees, drinks, and snacks as well but it's not necessary. We had a strong showing on March 23rd, in fact it was our biggest night ever with 41 runners! It's a pity that at even at our best efforts, we must submit to orders from adidas America.
adidas Urban Run San Francisco is still slated to be cancelled after our final run on Monday. We will do our best to reverse this action with adidas. On a sidenote, I have also encouraged Urban Runs in NYC, Santa Monica, and Irvine to have them send emails to adidas as well.
Hope to see everyone on Monday, no excuses will be accepted!

All Good Things Must Come to an End --PLEASE READ!
It is with much sadness that our final adidas Urban Run San Francisco EVER will be on March 30. adidas America and cip Marketing believe that during these obvious difficult circumstances, the budget can be allocated to other outlets and incentives that bring in greater revenue to the store and the company. The entire adidas Urban Run project will be cut; that means our sister Urban Runs in New York City, Irvine, and Santa Monica will all be gone.
In any case, we received the news with bittersweet feelings. On the one hand, we can actually focus on running and not worry so much about setting up the routes, food, and other cool things each week. On the other hand, we're also sad about not having an excuse to set up routes, post-run food, and other cool things each week. I, at the very least, hope that you have gathered enduring friendships and helpful running tips that will make your life much more enjoyable.
There is one thing that I hope some of you out there can gain from this. For those who have promised to come run with us so many times, you have only a few more times to rock out with us and have a great time. Make a promise to show up and do it! I don't understand how we have so many fans on our Facebook page, yet I don't even know who many of you are! We'll even exceed our budget for a couple more surprises to make you guys and gals show up! Yes, a bribe, but why not? What's the worst adidas can do to Urban Run now?
Track practice and long runs will ALWAYS go on as planned, and Warren and I will always be at your disposal for running advice and other concerns you may have.
adidas couldn't be happier with the level of support and exposure you have given to the store and the company. Thank you everybody for more than three years of running with us! Take a step back and look at how you've all changed...we're so happy that we were a part of your journey.
If you'd like to voice your opinion about adidas Urban Run San Francisco and what it means to you, send an email to the following:
Ace Rice (ace.rice@adidas.com)
Wil Britton (wil.britton@adidas.com)
Caren Forbes (Caren.Forbes@adidas.com)
A new chapter unfolds...make it great!

UPDATE: February/March 2009 Routes
What is adidas Urban Run SF?
Attempting to describe what we do every Monday does no justice. I think this video pretty much sums things up except we’re not on bikes, we don’t run in the middle of the road, and we don’t have a cheesy soundtrack (until now): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnnMUpDgVXI . Much of the places you see in the video are where we usually run.
We meet at the adidas Sport Performance Store on Mondays @ 6PM with the running start @ 6:30PM (unless otherwise noted). Our group is very diverse, open to all ages and all abilities. You are always greeted with food and refreshments at the end of your run. A generous discount is given to all runners and special promotions are offered throughout the year, including our monthly adidas shoe raffle.
We also have a Facebook page that allows you to connect with other runners so that you can train more effectively during other days of the week. Long runs on the weekend and track workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays have been options.
BTW, our Bay to Breakers hill workout training runs will resume in April. Be sure to submit your registration early to get your corral assignment. If you haven’t qualified for your seeded or sub-seeded position, race the Emerald Nuts Across the Bay 12K on March 15, 2009. Link to registration: http://www.rhodyco.com/across12k.html
